Why the Wind Is Exactly What You Need

Most people spend their lives trying to avoid the wind.

They wait for the perfect conditions. The right timing. More confidence. More certainty. More experience.

They tell themselves they'll take the leap when they feel ready.

But what if the wind isn't the problem?

What if the wind is the opportunity?

As a kitesurfer, I've spent more than twenty-five years chasing wind around the world. While most people look at a weather forecast predicting thirty or forty knots and decide it's a good day to stay indoors, I feel excitement.

Not because the conditions are easy.

Because they're not.

The stronger the wind, the more skill, focus, and awareness are required. The wind demands your attention. It exposes weaknesses. It forces you to adapt.

And that's exactly why it helps you grow.

The same thing happens in business and life.

Pressure gets a bad reputation. We often see it as something to survive, manage, or eliminate. Yet every breakthrough I've experienced has come during a season of pressure.

Pressure is what reveals character.

Pressure is what tests commitment.

Pressure is what turns knowledge into action.

Without resistance, there is no growth.

Without wind, a kite never leaves the ground.

Many of the people I work with are standing at the edge of an important decision. A conversation they need to have. A business they want to start. A leadership opportunity they want to pursue. A dream they've been carrying for years.

They aren't lacking talent.

They aren't lacking ability.

They're waiting for the fear to disappear.

The problem is that fear rarely disappears before action.

Confidence doesn't come first.

Action does.

One of the greatest lessons I've learned from both adventure sports and life is that courage is not a personality trait. It isn't something you're born with or without.

Courage is a skill.

And like any skill, it can be developed.

Every time you step into uncertainty, you strengthen it.

Every time you take a calculated risk, you strengthen it.

Every time you have the difficult conversation, make the pitch, ask for the opportunity, or put yourself out there, you strengthen it.

I call these "risk reps."

Just as muscles grow through resistance and repetition, courage grows through challenge and repetition.

The first rep feels uncomfortable.

The hundredth rep feels natural.

The challenge isn't eliminating fear.

The challenge is learning to move with it.

When I was a little girl, I was terrified of almost everything. Learning to ride a bike felt impossible. Public speaking was unthinkable. The adventures I've become known for today would have seemed absurd.

Yet every courageous thing I've ever done started with one small decision:

Go anyway.

Not because I felt fearless.

Because I decided the opportunity on the other side of fear mattered more than the discomfort I felt in the moment.

That decision changed everything.

The strongest winds of regret rarely come from the risks we took.

They come from the risks we never took.

The business we never started.

The opportunity we never pursued.

The dream we never gave ourselves permission to chase.

Years from now, very few people regret trying.

Many regret waiting.

So here's my challenge for you.

Identify your wind.

What conversation are you avoiding?

What opportunity have you been circling?

What risk have you been forecasting but not flying into?

Name it.

Write it down.

Then take one step.

Not tomorrow.

Not when you're ready.

Today.

Because courage is not built before the jump.

It's built into it.

And you might discover that the very thing you thought was holding you back is the thing that was designed to help you fly.
