Why Successful Women Work So Hard and Enjoy So Little

From the time we were young, the script was handed to us, and the message was clear: Work hard. Get good grades. Build a stable career. Make good money.

That was the definition of success.

And so, we did exactly what we were told. We put our heads down, worked late, got the degrees, climbed the corporate ladder, and finally hit those income goals.

But there’s a massive gap in that education. Nobody—not our parents, not our teachers, not society—ever taught us what to do once we actually arrived. Nobody taught us how to actually enjoy the life we built.

Instead, layered on top of our ambition was a different, more damaging narrative: the belief that being frugal, saving every last penny, and never spending on yourself is somehow morally superior.

The Myth of the "Responsible Woman"

We’ve been conditioned to believe that the woman who books the cheapest hotel is somehow more responsible than the one who upgrades to the suite. We’re told that tipping too generously is wasteful, and that spending money on yourself—just for you, simply because you want it—makes you irresponsible, selfish, or reckless.

It feels like you’re breaking a rule.

So now, here you are. You have the income you worked decades to secure, yet you still can’t let yourself enjoy it.

Here is the hard truth: The way you spend money is a direct reflection of how much enjoyment you are allowing yourself to experience. And for most successful women over 40, that allowed amount is far less than what they’ve actually earned.

It’s Not a Money Problem. It’s a Permission Problem.

I see this all the time in my coaching practice. I had a client—let’s call her Jane—who was raised with that exact directive to get good grades and make good money. She checked all the boxes and built a beautiful career making over $200k a year.

But the thought of spending money on herself? It felt yucky.

It wasn’t a feeling of financial instability or fear of going broke. It was just a heavy, uncomfortable feeling, like something was fundamentally wrong with wanting nice things.

Jane hadn’t been taught that enjoying her money was an essential part of success; she’d only been taught how to accumulate it. Every single dollar she spent on herself came with a lingering sense of guilt, like she was doing something she wasn't supposed to do.

When we worked together, the shift wasn't about budgeting or investment strategies. We changed how she felt about what she was allowed to want. We redefined what she deserved, and how much of her own life she was permitted to actually experience.

Beneath that uncomfortable feeling wasn’t a money problem at all. It was a permission problem.

Break the Rules and Rewrite Your Script

If Jane’s story sounds familiar, you aren’t alone. Most successful women are running on an outdated operating system that prioritizes sacrifice over satisfaction.

It is time to uncover what is standing between you and the rewards of your hard work.

Join me on July 28th at 6:00 PM PT for a live, 90-minute workshop designed specifically to help you unpack these blocks.

Together, we will discover:

  • The Earning vs. Enjoying Gap: Why you were taught to build wealth but never taught to live it—and how that pattern is showing up in your day-to-day life right now.

  • The Frugality Trap: How tightly binding your moral identity to "saving" is quietly robbing you of the vibrant life you've worked so hard to achieve.

  • The True Drivers of Your Spending: What is actually driving your financial behaviors (spoiler: it’s much bigger than the numbers in your bank account).

  • The Permission Shift: Exactly what needs to change so you can finally start enjoying your success—without guilt, without second-guessing, and without feeling like you’re doing something wrong.

You’ve spent decades earning your success. Now, it's time to learn how to live it.
