The Powerful Truth About Why You Self-Sabotage

I want to talk about self-sabotage, because it’s one of the most misunderstood patterns I see in the people I work with.

Most of us assume that when we don’t follow through on something that matters, it’s because we’re lazy, undisciplined, or just not trying hard enough. So we push harder, promise ourselves we’ll do better, and end up right back in the same place—quietly wondering what’s wrong with us.

Here is the truth: self-sabotage is never about willpower. It’s about safety.

And it rarely looks the way you’d expect.

  • The Perpetually Unready: The woman who’s been ready to launch her business for two years, but is still "just doing a little more research."

  • The Sudden Misstep: The professional who finally gets a promotion in her sights and, right on cue, picks a fight with her manager or lets a critical deadline quietly slip.

  • The Productive Distraction: The creator who clears a whole Sunday to write, then somehow finds herself deep-cleaning and reorganizing the pantry instead.

None of these people are lazy. They’re some of the most capable, driven individuals I know. And that is exactly the point.

Working from an Old Map

The part of you that pulls back right at the edge of change isn’t trying to ruin your life—it’s trying to keep you safe. Safe from failing, safe from being seen, or safe from wanting something deeply only to be let down.

At some point, often a very long time ago, a part of you decided that staying where you are was less risky than reaching for more. It’s been quietly running that decision ever since, using information that is years out of date.

Sit with that for a moment.

The choices you’re making today may be shaped by a much younger version of you, deciding in a moment when playing small genuinely was the safer bet. She wasn’t wrong then. She’s just working from an old map.

The Protection Mechanism

The hardest part is that most of us can’t see what that hidden part of us is trying to shield us from. We only see the end result:

  • The unfinished project

  • The opportunity we talked ourselves out of

  • The goal we swore we wanted, yet somehow kept avoiding

Then, we quietly decide it must be a flaw in our character. It isn’t. It’s a protection mechanism doing exactly what it was built to do.

And this is the piece that changes everything: you cannot push your way past something you can’t see.

You can white-knuckle it for a while, but the moment your attention drops, the old programming takes back over. It was never about trying harder in the first place.

Shifting from the Inside Out

This is the work I love most, because it’s where real transformation happens.

When you can finally see the pattern, name what it’s been protecting, and recognize that the threat it’s guarding against usually doesn’t even exist anymore, something loosens. The energy you’ve been pouring into fighting yourself becomes energy you can finally put toward the things you actually want.

That’s not a mindset trick—it’s the difference between forcing change and creating it from the inside out.

Ready to Break Through the Invisible Ceiling?

From October 5th to 8th, I’m hosting the Identity Shift Challenge—four live sessions where we go underneath strategy and goal-setting to address the subconscious beliefs quietly running the show.

Together, we will:

  1. Uncover the invisible ceiling you keep hitting.

  2. Look honestly at the hidden fear your self-sabotage has been protecting.

  3. Begin building the version of you who doesn’t have to fight herself to move forward.

I’d love to help you gain a seismic shift in insight and confidence so you can step into your most powerful self.
