The disconnect between work and accomplishment

You get acknowledged for the accomplishment, not the work.

This may be one of the hardest things to wrap our heads around as entrepreneurs. Most of our achievements are years in the making; so many days and nights of pouring heart and soul, blood, sweat, and tears, into creating an impact; yet we don’t get acknowledged for that. You only get acknowledgement at the very end, at the culmination of all that hard work.

The first astronauts to land on the moon spent years and years learning and preparing for their mission. More trained than made the trip to space. Ultimately, Neil Armstrong is the name we remember simply because he was the first to STEP onto the lunar surface, despite the fact that Buzz Aldrin made the trip with him and was there and joined him on the moons surface shortly thereafter.

Many athletes train for years and years to compete in the Olympics, often the difference between receiving a medal or not rests on a knife’s edge, a split second in time. But we acknowledge and celebrate the achievers, not those who showed up and did the work.

So, when that moment finally arrives, and the sum of your work comes to fruition, it doesn’t necessarily feel like you expect it too. It can be a temporary high or… even anti-climatic. Those around you will tell you how amazing you are, cheer you on, marvel at what you’ve done, and you. You’ve been doing it for years. This isn’t anything new to you. It’s the cherry on the sundae, that’s it.

This juxtaposition in how we feel vs. how we’re perceived can make you feel like somethings missing. But nothing is missing. This is what it feels like… usually just like another day, accept with people noticing you now. That’s why it’s essential to define happiness on your terms. External validation is short lived, and often, a let down. Find your joy within.

When you reach a milestone, be sure to acknowledge it, because you’ll likely feel like nothing is different. In reality, nothing is different, yet you spent years making it happen; so, while everyone else acknowledges the accomplishment, you take the time to acknowledge the work it took. You earned it.
