Tell us about your books! What do you love to write about?
Having been a victim of the diet industry, I am extremely passionate about undoing the damage they've done!! As Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, once said, "Let food be thy medicine and medicine thy food!"
My first book is a reverse diet manual insofar that it explains why you need ALL of the macronutrients (carbs, fats and protein) to function optimally and achieve whatever health and wellness goals you may have.
What inspired you to get started as an author?
I've seen too many family members struggle with preventable illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, et cetera because of the hustle culture we've been trained to accept. Growing up my parents, specifically my mom, used fast food at least once a week to get some reprieve from the pressure of doing everything for her kids. Combine that with the damage 20 years of dieting did to my body, I knew I had to change the conversation! It wasn't until I saw how quickly my body recovered from an accident with small changes in my eating habits that it clicked in my head: nutrient density matters more than any fad diet or calorie counting!!
What are your favorite books to read?
Oh goodness, this is a tough question because it depends on my mood. When I want to escape my life, I'll reach for crime novels - James Patterson is my favorite in this genre. If I'm feeling low, I'm open to self-development books. Code of the Extraordinary Mind by Vishen Lakhiani is something I read at least once a year to remind myself that I set the rules and boundaries in my personal life and professional career.
Other book genres I enjoy include fantasy, romance and personal finance.
For shoppers shopping for their loved ones, tell us who are your book(s) for?
My first book is for all of my fellow foodies out in the world! We eat what we love and refuse to give it up. Instead of falling for the false narrative of sacrifice and restrictions, I want people to understand how food is our most powerful ally in achieving our health and wellness goals. We all need to eat to survive, so why not figure out how to make your favorite foods more nutrient dense?!?
What’s the message you want to get out to people this Summer?
As a coach, there's so much I want to say, but my biggest passion is changing the conversation around healthy eating. For far too long it's been about restrictions and sacrifice. It's time we realize that carbs, fats and protein exist for a reason: high quality versions of these empower optimal health!! Carbs have fiber to keep the digestive system functional, fats lubricate our joints to keep us flexible and protein is the building block of life! When you understand the benefits of all the macronutrients, you'll be much more motivated to find better versions of the foods you enjoy. A quick example in my life is burgers. Ten years ago I decided that instead of give them up completely, I needed to test different alternatives to keep them in my food repertoire. I started using whole wheat then multigrain bread for the buns. It kept me fuller longer and let me keep eating something I love. Fast forward to the present and I'll dice vegetables really fine, sauté them and let them cool before mixing them in with ground beef.
Where can we find you online?
The best place for now is my personal Facebook profile: https://www.facebook.com/mirandacasiano. I know I should be on more social media platforms, but working a 9-5 job takes up a lot of my energy. I'd rather have 1 place where you can absolutely find me than burn out trying to be everywhere at once. You can also reach out to me via email at [email protected].
