Interview with Monica Miller

Monica Miller is your go-to Content Alchemist — helping women turn lived experience into market-moving messaging. As an international speaker, published author, and founder of Monica Writes, she’s known for bridging the gap between what’s in your heart and what your audience is dying to hear on and offline.

What kind of work do you do?

I help entrepreneur women get clear on their message so when they post online, they are seen as experts in their field. They enroll more clients and are asked to speak on stage. I’ve helped women tap back into their storytelling and creative side that they may have misplaced over the years.

What inspired you to get started as an entrepreneur?

Since the age of 12, I have been grooming myself to own my own business. I knew the lifestyle I wanted to live was one of freedom because I love to travel and I knew I would one day homeschool my kids. So owning my own business was the logical thing to do. Turns out, I needed to do this since my husband was in the military and it made perfect sense to have an online business to work from anywhere.

What was your biggest struggle to get things going for your online business?

Learning to market and do things my way. I wish I would have learned my Human Design a lot sooner because I spent years marketing and offering things the way other energies offered and worked only to find it didn’t work for me. It was a struggle to continue to push when it wasn’t working the way it “should have been.” If I knew that I was a Projector starting out, I would have marketed myself and my services differently and probably been more successful faster.

Was there a time you thought about giving up? What kept you from quitting?

Oh my gosh, I thought about quitting so many times in those first 5 years of owning my own business! I remember crying in bed with my husband because I felt like all I did was work and offered great programs, but no one brought them. I was driving 60+ minutes one way to network and it just wasn’t working. That’s one reason I decided to go fully online because the offline networking wasn’t bringing in clients.

The reason I never gave up was because I saw my vision, I saw what I knew I could create, and I felt like it was in my grasp! The dream of freedom was within me and I knew I could make it work. That’s what I held on to throughout all those hard times.

From time to time, I did worked part-time jobs to help supplement my income and I am grateful for those opportunities to have given me relief when I needed the financial pressure to be taken off.

What have you learned since beginning?

So many things! Lately, I have been learning to stay curious and tap into my creativity more and more. I’ve been investing in programs and courses that allow me to explore other interests outside of business and it has opened up new opportunities that have been so much fun for me!

Another area of learning is to give myself immense grace and let go of judgement. That is so hard because when we see others “making it”, it’s easy to compare and to feel like we’re not enough. One way of combating these thoughts is pouring back into myself. I have picked up Calligraphy where I practice writing in the mornings and it’s been fun to watch my progress and creativity expressing myself through writing.

You are enough and where you’re at is the perfect place to be right now. There’s no “right road” to getting to your destination because it’s all a journey. Journeys have side quests, wrong turns, and highways that are fast, even if there’s congestion sometimes.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

My Grandma used to say, “This too shall pass.” And she’s right. It’s so easy to get caught in what’s happening right now, but it always passes. This goes for money, relationships, certain seasons of child raising, business, the market, you name it, there’s a season for it. Try not to get caught up in what’s happening right now for it will always pass. You get to make it what it is now and decide how you want your tomorrow to look like (or even your next moment to look like)!

What advice would you give someone just starting out?

Learn to trust yourself. Everyone has an opinion on what works and what doesn’t work and while there may be validity in that, you have to find what works the best for you and your unique personality and energy. Learning to trust yourself deeply helps you make more aligned decisions with new aligned opportunities coming “out of the blue” because you’re on the right track for you!

What’s the professional win you’re most proud of?

Becoming an International Speaker! I was asked to speak at a retreat that was hosted on a cruise ship. I spoke in the Bahamas, which is in International waters! I am proud that I had someone who saw me as a valuable expert long before the retreat and knew she wanted me in her community. It was a natural flow for her to ask me to speak at her retreat and I am so honored to have said yes to her long before I knew I would be an International Speaker.

Which book(s) would you recommend to help entrepreneurs with success and personal development?

You are a Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero

We Should All Be Millionaires by Rachel Rodgers

Do you have a routine that you attest to your success? If yes, what is it?

I don’t have a routine that I would attest to my success, but I can tell you that waking up early to spend time with me and God has helped. I can usually tell the difference between the mornings when I don’t do this versus when I do because my day seems to be smoother. Of course, I do have small children, so waking up before them gives me much needed time to spend with me (and as mothers, we don’t always have that time!).

How has social media played a factor in your success?

Social Media has allowed me to meet so many people online that have asked me to speak at their events (in person and online), met business besties, found clients, collaborated with women that are truly amazing, and worked with women I never met! Because of social media, I have been able to make connections and network with others who are liked minded and are supportive. I have even met people who lived in my area online (then we would meet up in person!). Social media has opened up new opportunities and realms of possibilities that I know I couldn’t have achieved if I wasn’t online.

What are the biggest social media mistakes you see commonly made?

Lack of storytelling. Some people share their lives and stories well, which helps me to immediately connect with them.

But it seems some business owners are afraid of sharing their story for fear that their audience won’t buy from them or will see them “less than”. While there’s a line in how much you share online, I do believe that sharing your story will always benefit you and your brand more than you ever imagined.

Your story and experience is the very thing that separates you from your competitors, so why not utilize it to your advantage? I help my clients in sharing their stories in ways to keep their audience engaged while showcasing their expertise so they remain out of the “business friend” zone. Which is what many of my clients truly fear will happen when they share.

What is the business tool that’s been most helpful?

I am unsure if there’s a business tool I rely on the most that has been the most helpful, but I can tell you that I have at least 5+ years of materials on Canva that I may or may not have used!

Is there something you wish everyone knew?

I wish everyone knew how powerful their story is. It changed your life, so why don’t you think it can change someone else' s life? If it wasn’t for the decisions you made, you wouldn’t be a business owner. If it wasn’t for the mistakes you made, you wouldn’t be offering the programs you do. Your story is your brand and it’s so important to share it with others.

The best part about utilizing your story in your business is you can come at your story, the lessons, and the mistakes in different angles! This is the part I enjoy the most, is helping my clients see the different angles they can approach their story so they can share what is relevant, while being themselves on and offline.

What’s coming up for you in the next few months?

I have been having crazy fun with making and selling coloring books, which feels like it’s left field, but as a natural creative who loves expressing herself, this feels aligned! So I will be offering more classes around how to create coloring books and journals for cash while also offering programs around speaking and becoming clear on your message.

I have a speaker retreat in November 2025 where participants will leave with a speech, speaker branded photos and b-roll, and ways to be seen as a speaker in their field!

What has being successful taught you?

We never truly arrive! My coach pointed out that I was living the life I always wanted, but it didn’t “look” the way I thought it would. Even when I have “arrived”, I was looking at the next thing or what I want my life to look like next. I believe this idea or belief of “arriving” is BS as we are never arriving, we’re on a journey. That is why I LOVE it when people share their real and raw stories because you get to watch some people “make it”, only to “lose it” and then gain it back again. I respect those people so much because they had to go through the mind crap of “What will my audience think about me?” to learn something new about themselves! They get to bring that magic into their businesses that helps them soar into the next level!

I would challenge you to look at your life right now and see if you have “arrived”. If you’ve prayed to be where you are right now, be grateful and relish it while, at the same time, planning on moving into your next level.

What are some fun facts about you?

I had a speech impediment as a little girl and still have problems saying words with the R sound. However, due to this speech impediment, many people think I sound British and I will run with that all day long.

I was born and raise in the South (Georgia to be exact!).

I have written 3 books, one workbook, 3 journals, and now a coloring book!

I was in the movie, The Crazies, as an extra.

I was once a photographer.

I love reading Young Adult Fantasy.
