Heid Smith is a Certified Life Coach and Tarot Practitioner that blends spiritual practices with practical everyday life to unite women with their intuition and higher selves so they can live a life of purpose, passion and fulfillment. She is a wife and mother of 2 beautiful daughters and strives every day to be a role model and inspiration to her girls. She would like them to grow up knowing they can live the life of their dreams at any age.

What kind of work do you do?

I support women who feel lost, disconnected, and purposeless to dig down deep and get in touch with who they are. In today’s world women are expected to wear all kinds of hats and be so much to other people that we lose ourselves. Life becomes one big blur that we navigate through on autopilot. Through spiritual practices like tarot, meditation, and reflection we can begin to rediscover who we are and the importance of our own identity and voice.

What inspired you to get started as an entrepreneur?

I guess I had always been destined to be an entrepreneur. I started off working in television production, which is all contract work and constantly looking for your next job. After having my first child the hours I worked and lifestyle just weren’t conducive to raising children, not that it can’t be done, but not the way I wanted it. I wanted to be home and be there for first steps and first words, so I left. I started up my own daycare, which really pushed me because now it wasn’t just finding contracts, it was running an entire small business. This served me for many years. Then COVID hit, which meant a hit to my business, and I am sure like many people, I went through my own dark night of the soul. All the time COVID gave me allowed me to really look at where I was in life, what I wanted, and most importantly, who I was.

What was your biggest struggle to get things going for your online business?

Figuring out where to start. The online space is big and vast and there are so many different avenues and social media platforms now that finding out where to focus energy and engagement can be overwhelming. Honestly, maybe this dates me, but I’m still confused about Instagram Reels. Pointing? Dancing? Voice Over? Not for me. But in learning about this all you really discover what platforms work for you and which you can show up authentically to serve.

Was there a time you thought about giving up? What kept you from quitting?

Oh yes. About a month in imposter syndrome hit and I had that little voice in my head (affectionately named The Gremlin) asking if I thought I could do this. If I was good enough. If people really needed me. What kept me going was my own practice of self parenting that I have developed over the last couple years. Being able to stop, think critically about that own voice, and the place it is coming from helped me reframe my thinking. Once I did that someone messaged me to book a session. And yes, I made it sound super easy here, but I have been working on self parenting for 2 years and it is a practice I continue to work on. Its not always easy and takes determination and discipline, and sometimes even support.

What have you learned since beginning?

A LOT! Seriously! A daycare service-based business is one thing. Coming to the online world with all the tools at your finger tips is another. I think my biggest takeaway though was how much of a reach Facebook has, since its integrated into so much of our lives. I did some training on marketing withing Dacebook and the power it has, if you know how to work the algorithms in your favour, it can be an incredible tool.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

I cannot remember for the life of me where I heard this, but I have integrated it into so much of my mindset. The best advice I have received is “There is no such thing as failure. Just feedback as to what didn’t work this time.” With that as a mantra, or mindset so much becomes possible because you’re open to possibilities, learning and growing. Also, if there no such thing as failure that fear is totally gone.

What advice would you give someone just starting out?

Go for it. Just go for it. You’re going to make mistakes. You’re going to look rough at the beginning, but just do it and you will be so thankful you did. And you’ll probably be surprised at how many people need what you offer. The other thing I would suggest is get support. Whether its training, or a networking group, even an accountability buddy. Support is everything when you are an entrepreneur.

What’s the professional win you’re most proud of?

Getting my first client. I say this not just as a new coach either. That first daycare client really was everything. It gave me the confidence to push myself further out of my comfort zone. After hearing a lot of no’s, that first yes is so important. Even today I remember it and am thankful for it.

Which book(s) would you recommend to help entrepreneurs with success and personal development?

It may sound like a weird choice but I would recommend The Way of Integrity by Martha Beck. Its not business oriented, but I recommend it because as an entrepreneur you have to be so comfortable with you. With your idea, your vision, and how you want to show up in your business. There is so many people out there that will want to tell you how to run your business and what you “have” to do to be successful. Developing that strong sense of self and being accountable to you and your values is so important.

Do you have a routine that you attest to your success? If yes, what is it?

Routine hahahaha. I have my small daily practices that I do before the kids wake up and it all becomes chaos. I wake at 5am and get a workout in. After I spend my time in a 5 minute meditation to ground and center myself. Then comes my favorite part! I turn to my tarot to really help me connect with myself. I usually draw 1 to 3 cards depending on what I feel I need. Generally I ask what do I need to know, what challenges may I face, and what can I do to support myself. I’ll journal on what cards I drew and even snap a picture. I’ll go back to my journal or picture throughout the day if I need it as a reminder.

How has social media played a factor in your success?

Social media has played a factor in my success by getting my name out there, even in my local community. It has helped me network and bring me into contact with even old friends and acquaintances who either are looking for spiritual coaching or know people that do. I am also meeting people and networking in my local community now who are also working in spiritual businesses so we can all help and support each other. It really doe help you keep connected, as well as help you learn and grow as I dive deeper into spiritual practices and the spiritual community.

What are the biggest social media mistakes you see commonly made?

The biggest mistakes I see being made are people being pushy out of desperation. I have been approached by so many people who want me to buy their program, or product, or service. I am the type that needs to do my research and weigh my options to make sure it’s the right investment for myself, but so many people are desperate for a sale that they won’t take “I need to think about it” for an answer. They try to push you into a sale, and that doesn’t sit well with me. If you purchase something out of being pushed, you’re never going to be fully satisfied with it nor the person that you bought it from. Some people need time to make sure the investment is right for them. I have walked away from lots of sales because the person just kept bothering me and bothering me. If someone needs time to think, schedule a time to get back to them. You and your service aren’t for everyone. You want to work with people who want to work with you!

What is the business tool that’s been most helpful?

My calendar! Running a daycare, and building a coaching business keep me busy, then add in family. My schedule gets full quickly. I live and die by my calendar. It is the tool I use to keep me on track, to know what I did, to know what is coming up. Its how I stay organized an on top of everything. Never underestimate the power of writing it down, and scheduling time for everything!

Is there something you wish everyone knew?

I wish everyone knew that it takes times. Whatever “it” is. Building a business? It takes time, generally 2 to 5 years. Learning a new skill, yeah takes time too. Working on transforming your life? Oh, hey time, I see you. Don’t get discouraged or beat yourself if whatever you are working towards doesn’t happen right away. Breathe and give yourself time to build something you truly love. Nothing happens over night. Work on small consistent daily action.

What’s coming up for you in the next few months?

In the next few months, I am launching a free mini workshop all about expanding the use of Tarot in your daily life. I really want to showcase how powerful a tool it can be for both personal and spiritual development. I’ll be holding that workshop in my facebook group so its all online. After than I’ll be exploring charka healing, and hoping to add that to the skills I can deliver in my practice.

What has being successful taught you?

Being successful has taught me that I define my own success. I say when I am successful. I say when I want to stop and when I want to push forward. No one else gets to define what my success looks like, but me. And my success isn’t going to look like anyone else’s because I am not them.

What are some fun facts about you?

I am still a big kid at heart who loves to engage in play. I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons since I was 16. I don’t plan on stopping any time soon. Its really a place where I can stretch my imagination, and,  therefore, my thinking. I also love True Crime. Morbid is one of my favorite podcasts. I am just so curious as to what makes someone go down the path of darkness. I also love putting the pieces together and solving a mystery. Maybe I was a detective in a past life.
