Interview with Christine Burrows

Please tell us about yourself!

I am an online crafter which means that I run my own website, YouTube channel and Etsy shop. I have always loved crafting and gardening, having got the basic skills from my mum when I was a child. She taught me to sew, knit, crochet and garden.

As an adult I have carried on developing my skills and loving my hobbies. Alongside that I have been a Mechanical Engineer, a Maths Teacher and Tutor plus a wife and mum to 2 boys who are now grown-up.

A few years ago I turned my hobby into a business and I absolutely love it!

What kind of work do you do?
I help people develop their creativity and enjoy crafting without breaking the budget. I firmly believe that crafting is for all and can really improve our lives.

What inspired you to get started as an entrepreneur?
I was inspired to strike out on my own as I was not fulfilled in my teaching career and I felt that I wanted more control over my life and how I helped people. The business side and technical side were things that I could learn. I already had the crafting and teaching skills.

What was your biggest struggle to get things going for your online business?
I found it hard at the beginning to gain any sort of traction without spending a lot of money on ads. I didn’t feel that I had the experience to run ads wisely and I had time but not much money. As a result it took quite some time to really get started earning any real money.

Was there a time you thought about giving up? What kept you from quitting?

About 3 years into the business, I felt like I had turned it into a treadmill. I felt constantly pressured to produce more content and publish to a fixed schedule. I was in the social media trap. I stopped enjoying it!
Instead of quitting I re-evaluated where I wanted the business to go, what success looked like to me and changed direction slightly.

What have you learned since beginning?

What works for one business does not necessarily work for yours. You need to try different approaches and then choose what works for your particular circumstances. It can be easy to develop ‘shiny object’ syndrome and follow what everyone advises instead of pausing, analysing the new thing and making a conscious decision.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

Make sure you choose a business you enjoy and keep enjoying it as at times it will consume you and if you hate it you will not persevere through those times.

What advice would you give someone just starting out?

Being an entrepreneur can be lonely so find like-minded people and share the highs and lows. Most people will never understand what you are doing (or why).

What’s the professional win you’re most proud of?
I am most proud of the fact that I have set up my website and YouTube channel on my own despite having no technical skills.

How has social media played a factor in your success?
It depends on your definition of social media. I don’t think Instagram, Facebook and X have significantly moved the needle. However, Pinterest and YouTube have been essential for me getting the word out about my business.

What are the biggest social media mistakes you see commonly made?
When it comes to Pinterest and YouTube the two biggest mistakes are giving up too soon and not learning from your data!

What is the business tool that’s been most helpful?
For my YouTube channel I would have to recommend Vidiq. Truly great tool for all video creators.

Is there something you wish everyone knew?
Start your business instead of dreaming and always putting it off

What’s coming up for you in the next few months?
In the next few months I am presenting at some online craft summits and I am looking to expand my range in my Etsy shop.

What has being successful taught you?
There is no substitute for hard work and being constantly open to learning. At the start of my journey I knew nothing about websites or YouTube but I learnt along the way.

What are some fun facts about you?
My first career was as a mechanical engineer in a time when there were very few of us! My cat, Emily, helps out in the business and when she appears she regularly gets more comments on YouTube than I do!
