Interview with Laura Charelle

Laura Charelle is a high performance women’s health coach and founder of Balanced Bombshells, which teaches active and busy boss babes how to naturally balance their hormones for a happy, healthy, and productive life.

Through hormone balancing recipes, cycle based living, and education on seven key sets of hormones, Laura empowers women to manage their lives better so they look, feel, and perform at their best.

After leaving numerous doctors offices in tears and without answers, Laura sought a different approach to her health. She has become an expert in women’s health after 10 years of research and testing how to use hormones to her advantage. Her mission is to teach as many women as possible about their hormones, so they can have the confidence and energy to lead their full lives.

What kind of work do you do?

I teach active and ambitious women how to naturally balance their hormones for high performance at work, in their fitness, relationships and life.

What inspired you to get started as an entrepreneur?

By the age of 7 I knew I’d own a business one day. I just never knew what! After spending eight years in professional fundraising and feeling extremely burnt out, I kept practicing how to hack my hormones so I had more energy, felt less stressed, and could still get the physical results I wanted like a high metabolism and no bloating. Once I figured out how to get rid of PMDD (a more severe case of PMS) I just knew I had to teach other women how to use their monthly cycle to their advantage too. We’re taught at a young age that all the symptoms women experience are normal, and once I saw how much they were holding me back in life and hurting my self confidence, I felt inspired to share everything with other women!

What was your biggest struggle to get things going for your online business?

The biggest learning curve was learning how to utilize online marketing to drive traffic for your business. Each platform is different and needs to be used in different ways. Marketing is an art and a lifelong process for every business owner!

Was there a time you thought about giving up? What kept you from quitting?

So many times! Running your own business is like anything else in life, some days are really fun and you love it. Other days are extremely challenging and make you want to give up. What always kept me from quitting was thinking about all the women who needed the information I had to share. It took me 10 years to research and implement in a way that actually works for young women today and I felt like I would be doing a disservice if I quit. Receiving emails from clients or social media messages from women all over the world, thanking me for the information and tips I shared is the best motivator when running a business!

What have you learned since the beginning?

Since the beginning I’ve learned how important an entrepreneur’s mindset is. It’s truly everything when you’re looking to succeed and achieve your goals with grace. Some things you do aren’t going to work out. While others will seem effortless. How you talk to yourself and show up for the challenges really makes all the difference to whether you’ll succeed or not. I actively take time to get outside and move around throughout the day. And always make sure I’m connecting with the people in my life outside of work. It really helps to be reminded that your life is not all about work.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

The best piece of advice I’ve ever received came from a promotion video I worked on while working in fundraising in New York City. The event we held was for a school for children with learning differences, something both my siblings struggled with when we were kids. We interviewed one of the parents in the video and I still remember his words so clearly on why he chose to donate his time and resources. He said, “always make sure you get involved in something bigger than yourself”.

I was 23 when I heard his words and they have stuck with me ever since. When you decide to run a business, you are showing up to solve a big problem in other people’s lives. I see my work as becoming involved in something far bigger than myself and it motivates me every day.

What advice would you give someone just starting out?

Ask for help! You can’t do it alone and asking for help in areas you’re not as educated in is crucial. And don’t be afraid to try something new and fail. Sometimes you have to test a lot of things before something really sticks.

What’s the professional win you’re most proud of?

I am most proud of having the courage to take action on my passions in women’s health. It felt extremely liberating when, after a year of working full time and creating Balanced Bombshells on the side, to give my notice at work and become a full time entrepreneur.

Is there a book you’d recommend to help with success and personal development?

One of my favorite books for success and personal development is “May Cause Miracles” by Gabrielle Bernstein. This book will help you face your fears and what has been blocking you in your life. It also makes you realize truths about yourself you’ve long since ignored. This book has helped me so much personally (first time I read it I met my now husband a few weeks later!) and professionally, so I can see areas in which I’m playing small and getting stuck in my comfort zone.

Do you have a routine that you attest to your success? If yes, what is it?

Yes! To keep up with the demands of life and business, I practice what I preach and strategically partner what I eat, how I exercise, and how I plan my work activities to how my hormones naturally fluctuate throughout the month. For work, I take the times of the month our brain is more likely to want to reflect, strategize, communicate, or focus on working independently and schedule my time accordingly. It has changed my life completely where I don’t feel as stressed out week to week and I don’t get stuck in the mindset of “I’m suppose to be doing X, Y, and Z right now, but I just can’t focus on it”. A woman’s mind and body has a specific flow and it makes so much sense when we start tuning into it.

How has social media played a factor in your success?

Social media has been a game changer for sure. Women end up coming across my social media channels from all over the world. I love how it allows you to connect with the souls who resonate with you and need your help. The biggest factors to my business success have actually come from YouTube and Pinterest, not always Instagram or Facebook.

What are the biggest social media mistakes you see commonly made?

People often use each platform the same and it hurts their reach and engagement. Each platform is set up in a very specific way and intended purpose. When an entrepreneur can utilize each social media channel correctly, that’s when they’ll see more growth. For example, I see a lot of people trying to drive traffic or sell through most of their posts on Facebook or Instagram. While this can be done, these channels are more of a handshake and community building tool for your audience. The most effective way is to build rapport and engage regularly. Then filter in your CTAs on what you’d like from your audience.

What is the business tool that’s been most helpful?

A business tool that has been really helpful is probably not your usual productivity hack. Something that has been life changing in the way I work is actively stepping away and doing an activity that promotes relaxation and mindfulness. This can be a short yoga break to stretch by my desk, rebounding on the mini trampoline in my office (breaks up your stress hormones and activates the body’s waste management so you increase energy and naturally detox stress), meditation for more awareness, and my favorite, walking. Anytime I’m stuck on a project or can’t see the full picture of how something will come together, I go out for my daily walk. Being in nature and releasing endorphins helps clear my mind.

I do see all of this as a business tool because if my head and energy aren’t in alignment, there is no way my business can run effectively.

Is there something you wish everyone knew?

I wish more people knew how to allow space for big ideas to flush themselves out. Our culture demands instant gratification, but if we can take small, consistent action every day and create space for our ideas to breathe, it’s far less stressful than everyone thinks.

What’s coming up for you in the next few months?

In the next few months I’ll be hosting a virtual Women’s Health Summit for women who love learning about health and wellness, and are looking to start or expand their business with hormonal health.

What has being successful taught you?

Being successful has taught me how important it is to get out of your comfort zone and face what scares you. Greater levels of happiness come when you’re willing to get out of your own head and try something new.

What are some fun facts about you?

Some fun facts about me include:

  1. I grew up in a small town in Massachusetts where we got our first traffic light when I was graduating high school!
  2. After college, I was looking for ways to unwind after work and found some YouTube videos that taught me how to crochet. Instead of being the crazy lady with all the homemade blankets, I share my talent by crocheting baby blankets for friends.
  3. I eat dark chocolate every day! #noshame
