Help Morpheus Receive Palliative Comfort Care for His Kidney Disease

In late 2024, our world shifted when Morpheus was diagnosed with kidney disease and hyperthyroidism. It was a lot to process, but we focused on doing everything we could to support him and keep him feeling good for as long as possible.

Then, in mid December 2025, things took a frightening turn.

On December 12th, Morpheus stopped eating. Two days later, he stopped drinking entirely. He became disoriented, began hiding in cupboards, and behaved in ways we had never seen before. By December 15th, we were sitting in the vet’s office having one of the hardest conversations a pet parent can face: whether to attempt aggressive supportive care or to let him go peacefully.

He had lost a full pound in just four weeks.

Our only priority was his comfort and quality of life. We chose to give him the chance to recover. Morpheus began receiving subcutaneous fluids, anti nausea medication, and a hunger stimulant. We were taught how to administer his fluids at home and carefully manage his medications.

The days that followed were emotionally exhausting.

He would walk to his food bowl. He would stand by the water. But he wouldn’t eat or drink. Each moment brought fresh tears. He spent most of his time sleeping by the heater, his little body clearly worn down.

One night, I truly believed he wouldn’t make it to morning. I stayed awake with him, holding him close, sharing quiet moments and love in case it was goodbye.

But morning came, and something incredible happened...

Morpheus drank. He ate.

Slowly, carefully, he continued. Within a week, he had regained half a pound. And now, as of January 14th, just one month later, Morpheus is doing remarkably well. He’s playful again, running around with his five feline companions, eating enthusiastically, and enjoying life.

While kidney disease is not curable, we are deeply grateful that with proper palliative care, Morpheus can have such a strong quality of life.

His care is ongoing and detailed. Every day he requires morning and evening hyperthyroid medication, anti nausea support, and a dermal appetite stimulant. Every 48 hours, he needs subcutaneous fluid injections. He also requires regular vet visits and blood work to monitor his condition.

To support his kidneys, he now eats almost exclusively wet food, costing about $12 per day. Altogether, his care comes to just under $1,000 per month.

Our goal is simple. We want Morpheus to feel good. We want him comfortable, loved, and able to enjoy every moment he has with us.

If you’re able to help in any way, we are deeply grateful. Your support helps give Morpheus the gentle, loving care he deserves in this chapter of his life.
