"Before You Ask If They're Right for You: Ask If You Feel Emotionally Safe?”

Article by Raquelle Williams

When we think about healthy relationships, we often focus on one question:

"Are they the right person for me?"

It's a reasonable question, but I've found that it may not be the most important one.

A better place to begin is by asking yourself:

"Do I feel emotionally safe with this person?"

Emotional safety isn't about whether someone agrees with you all the time or never makes mistakes. It's about how you experience the relationship over time.

  • Can you express your thoughts without fearing ridicule?
  • Do your concerns lead to conversations rather than defensiveness?
  • Do their words consistently match their actions?
  • Can you be yourself without feeling like you have to earn their affection?

These questions shift our attention away from chasing certainty and toward observing reality.

Too often, we mistake chemistry for compatibility. We confuse potential with consistency. We hold tightly to hope while overlooking what our own observations have been trying to tell us.

Hope isn't the problem.

Hope allows us to remain open to new possibilities and meaningful connections. But hope works best when it walks alongside honesty.

When hope asks us to ignore repeated inconsistencies, dismiss our intuition, or explain away behaviors that leave us feeling anxious or uncertain, it stops serving us.

One of the most empowering things we can do is learn to trust ourselves again.

That doesn't mean assuming the worst about people. It means giving equal weight to what we consistently experience.

Emotional safety is built through reliability, mutual respect, accountability, curiosity, and open communication. It's not created through grand gestures or promises about the future. It develops one interaction at a time.

This perspective has become the foundation of my coaching and the inspiration behind my book, The Emotionally Safe Woman. While the book explores dating and relationships, its message reaches far beyond romance. Learning to recognize emotional safety changes the way we navigate friendships, family relationships, the workplace, and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship we have with ourselves.

Healthy relationships don't begin with finding a perfect person.

They begin with becoming someone who trusts herself enough to recognize the difference between uncertainty and inconsistency, between chemistry and compatibility, and between hope that supports growth and hope that keeps us stuck.

So before asking whether someone is right for you, pause for a moment and ask a different question:

Do I feel emotionally safe being fully myself with this person?

Sometimes, that single question tells us more than we've been willing to hear.
