Interview with Amber Powers... Author of Untethered

amber powers author interview marketing shop from her spirituality untethered May 07, 2024

Amber Powers grew up in a cult-like religion in middle America where she felt suppressed and limited. It wasn't until she began to question her life and her true beliefs that she was able to slowly untether herself from a complicated community, find spirituality on her own terms, and discover the power of her voice and purpose in order to help other women embrace theirs.

Amber is the President of Powers Digital Marketing and the Founder of Shop From Her, an online platform that supports over 35,000 women-owned businesses around the world. Named one of the top 100 content marketers in the US, she's been featured in the Los Angeles Times, Canvas Rebel, and several top 1% podcasts. She lives in Florida with her husband.

What kind of work do you do?

I work with people who think they have a marketing problem, but the reality is they have a mindset problem. Marketing (in large part) is pulling levers and setting up systems. You can pay other people to do that. But no amount of "lever pulling" is going to make up for the fact that you don't know who you are. And when you find out who you are, there's a process to both finding your voice and giving yourself permission (and finding the courage) to USE your voice. That's where I come in. I've done the work. I found my voice. And now it's my passion to lead other women to do the same. Plus, I have 20+ years of experience in marketing as a strategist, community builder, and copywriter to help guide you on pulling those levers - when we get there.

You are a published author, tell us all about your book!

"Untethered: The Story of How I Lost My Religion To Find My Voice" takes the reader on a journey through the twists and turns my life has taken as a spiritual and human being. It shares the story of my own victimhood and self-loathing. After a life fraught with sexual, physical, mental, and emotional abuse, through a winding path full of spiritual discovery, I was able to take back the power that was rightfully mine, heal my wounded inner child, learn to love myself, trust my intuition, find my voice, and use my voice to make the changes I want to see in the world.

What inspired you to write it?

The number of people who have heard parts of my story and encouraged me that it needed to be heard by the world. After intentionally starting my healing journey in 2019, I knew that other women (and men) who had been through similar things in their lives needed to hear that there was hope. While I share the journey I took to find healing, I encourage everyone to learn what it means to trust your intuition, and follow your own inner voice to find the healing your spirit needs.

What did you enjoy most about the writing process?

Do people actually ENJOY the process of writing? Hahahaha!! Listen - writing a memoir is a process... and it can be a painful one. Because growth and healing is often painful, especially in the beginning stages. So did I enjoy the process? No more than I'd love disrobing in front of thousands of people (which I have zero desire to do). Writing a memoir is a vulnerable process. It's one where you let people in - share some of the darker sides of you. But the part I do enjoy is already getting feedback from literally every person who's reviewed it stating they devoured the whole book in an entire sitting. I enjoy hearing from people who have remarked how it's already starting to help them heal from their own traumas. That's why I wrote it. That's what makes every bit of vulnerability worth it.

What was the most exciting moment after it was published?

You'd think it was the moment I hit "International Best Seller" status - but it wasn't. It was in speaking to people personally who'd read the book and learning what it meant to them. It was in hearing the actionable take-aways that they're going to be implementing into their own lives. I never would've written this book had it not been for intuitively knowing the transformative power it held for others.

What do you hope readers will takeaway?

I hope readers start to learn what their "gut feelings" are. It's your intuition - and it's not going to lead you astray. I hope others start to understand that fear-based belief systems were created to control us and to keep us playing small. I hope that readers become more intentional in ALL things - from the depth of their breath to the thoughts they allow to stay and take up space in their minds.
