What does success really mean to you?

What does success really mean to you? I don't think many of us ask this question of ourselves, of our souls, enough.

It's so easy to get caught up chasing, running after more money, more clients, more accolades, running after societal expectations. But are you, you as an individual, you as a soul temporarily inhabiting a body, with limited time in this life, are you acting out of choice or conditioning?

As entrepreneurs in the online space, we're constantly being bombarded with new content from our peers that can make us feel like we must catch up, and be under no illusion, if you don't address this now no external markers will inhibit this feeling. You might think, "once I make 5k, 19k, 100k, 1m, etc. Months then I won't compare," but that's BS. The comparison is a habit based on internal beliefs. Maybe to prove you're good enough. Maybe to prove you're worthy. Maybe to ease the anxiety around money. But external circumstances only offer momentary relief from a belief you operate from.

You must fix the root. You also need to get clear on what you really want, not what anyone else wants but what you desire deep in your heart. Maybe you've only been chasing the white picket fence house because that was your interpretation of what "success" was based on your subconscious imprinting in your youth. Maybe you don't really need a mega yacht or a Lamborghini to be happy (also, nothing wrong with having either or both if they truly due set your soul ablaze!)

I am all for abundance and expansion; but you don't have to kill yourself to attain it, and you also don't have to get all the things that don't matter to you just because other people assign them value or attest them as markers of success. When we peel back the layers, we can uncover the truth in our hearts and place ourselves in pursuit of more joy, more time to spend with loved ones, more compassion. In pursuit of positively impacting our planet and the lives of the inhabitants on it. In pursuit of more happiness.  In pursuit of more love. In pursuit of kindness.

We can measure our success in the special moments that nurture our hearts and touch our souls. We don't take any of the physical stuff with us when we die... that doesn't mean you shouldn't attain it and be a steward of the things that make your life more enjoyable, but to be clear about what is most meaningful to you while you're alive. When we die, our memories are all we'll have to take with us.

For me, those potent memories are the big hugs from my dad that make me feel safe and loved, giggling with my mom at our made-up stories, cuddling with my cats and marveling at their beauty, swimming in the ocean with my husband and feeling like a kid again. The marvel of nature, the smell of fresh air in summer, sharing meals with the people I love, laughing until my face hurts with my friends, the awe and adventure of a good book, movie, or video game. Time to be and experience love and happiness; these have meaning beyond our physical existence. What brings you joy? What do you love? Allow these things to redefine your definition of success.
