Let's talk about the "S" word, sales! Dun, dun, dun!

I'm always seeing entrepreneurs cringing when it comes to selling because they:

A. Don't want to be pushy

B. Just want to focus on their creative or back-end activities

C. Feel that sales are icky or gross

D. Don't want to be associated with the term "salesperson"

E. Are terrified of rejection

F. They don't want to cold pitch

OR

G. Have no fucking clue how to have a sales conversation and feel totally paralyzed

I get it. My sales journey started over a decade ago, and it was door-to-door sales (yup, the kind where doors get slammed in your face). And it was scary! Then I did live in stores sales presentations on 100% commission and the fear of failure was intense! Though after a while I got good at it and it was addictive.

In 2013 I moved to online sales, and frankly... it was like starting from scratch. Selling online and on social media is a whole other ball game! Now, seven years later, selling online is my favourite kind of selling! So, I want to talk you through this if you feel any of the above:

You don’t want to be pushy

Thank goodness! No one wants to be pushed. I always say, "Pushing sales pushes the buyer away." Your only job is to offer; no coerce, convince, or push.

You only want to focus on the creative stuff

Here's the thing, first, if you're not selling it, then it's a hobby, not a business. Second, you're robbing others of your gifts by not offering them to us. Selling benefits both you and your client.

You feel sales are gross

Yeah, the word salesman still conjures up images of some used car dealer trying to sell a lemon to someone, but no that's not what sales are about. Sales are about helping people solve a problem with your product or service.

You don’t want to be called a Salesperson

My dear if you’re an entrepreneur you are a salesperson. Entrepreneurs by definition solve problems at a profit. Sales is the lifeblood of any business. The idea that sales are bad is based on a belief; like everywhere else in your growth journey, we have to change our beliefs about sales in order to flourish. It’s mindset work time.

You’re terrified of rejection

Don't confuse "I don't want that," with, "I don't want you." Big difference!

You don’t want to cold pitch

Again, thank goodness! I block people who cold pitch. Build real relationships with people, that's important.

You have no idea how to have a sales conversation

You’ve got to learn, no one is born knowing. I'd suggest reading books, taking courses, and/or hiring a coach or mentor to accelerate your learning process so you can sell with ease and have fun doing it (plus rake in the dough!)
