The Infinite Power of You Book Club is excited to announce our June 2021 Author of the Month... Jani Clark with her Book Becoming Your Own Best Friend!

About Jani

Jani Clark lives in Texas with her 5 year old son. She has a background in social work, psychology, and trauma treatment. Jani is a Soul Health Coach, self-compassion teacher, intuitive tarot reader, reiki practitioner, and published author. In her spare time, you can find Jani reading, tie-dyeing, and spending quality time with family and friends.

What kind of work do you do?

I work with individuals who struggle with perfectionism, low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety, and teach them self-compassion skills to help cope with life's ups and downs. I also work with the Angelic realm during reiki sessions and provide intuitive guidance while reading tarot cards for my clients online or at local markets.

You are a multi-published author, tell us all about your new book!

Becoming Your Own Best Friend: A journey into shadow and light integration is Jani's second spiritual self-help book (published in mid-May 2021). This book is about the connection between the mind, body, and emotions. It goes into depth about several heavy and challenging emotions, as well as shining light on all the things that make you YOU. The book ends with helpful ways to integrate both the dark and light aspects of the human experience.

What inspired you to write it?

During my graduate field placement, I shadowed a therapist whose main modality is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which focuses on mindfulness and acceptance. While working alongside her, I was introduced to Dr. Kristin Neff's research on self-compassion. This skill has become the core of my mission in life. When I reflect on how far I've come on my own spiritual, awakening journey, I am able to appreciate all the heavy and challenging emotions I have experienced due to hard life situations. I wouldn't be who I am today without mindfully observing these emotions and learning how to work through them in healthy ways. I passionately want to help others see their path more clearly with more loving-kindness, thus Becoming Your Own Best Friend was born.

What did you enjoy most about the writing process?

This book took much longer than my first one. I had to organize my notes, schedule time around work and raising my kid, as well as moving, finishing up my hours at my internship and graduating from my MSW program. PHEW! I had someone recently tell me they could never write a book because they don't have time. I literally laughed out loud. You make time when you REALLY care about something.

What was the most exciting moment after it was published?

I'm not sure that has happened yet. I mean, I'm extremely proud of myself for finishing it, especially with so much going on in my life, but it's newly published so the journey has just begun!

What do you hope readers will takeaway?

My intention is for my readers to recognize just how powerful their mind is and how their emotions (whether labeled "good" or "bad") are vital to their experience here on Earth. Emotions are within everything we do, and they all have a message to share. It is possible to practice self-compassion and feel your emotions without getting lost in a state of suffering.

What inspired you to get started as an entrepreneur?

My soul's blueprint! Meaning, I am wired for freedom. I also highly dislike being told what I can and cannot do. I've healed many of these "limiting beliefs" and "upper limit problems" in order to create a life and business based on my terms so I can lead, teach, and serve from my passionate heart and awakened mind.

What was your biggest struggle to get things going for your online business?

Old, outdated stories I kept telling myself based on what I learned and witnessed growing up (plus karma -- lessons not yet learned and mastered -- from my past lives). I can't say I don't struggle anymore, because I certainly still do at times. We're all a work in progress... that's why we came here. I'm a full believer in reincarnation and choosing our experiences as part of the Higher Divine Plan. Everything is connected. And it ALL serves a purpose. All emotions and thoughts hold a special message if you listen closely enough.

Was there a time you thought about giving up? What kept you from quitting?

Oh yes, and I did put everything on "pause" a couple times and got a "real job"... Both situations ended roughly the same way: my boss let me go because of xyz reasons. I was never a "bad" employee, but they could always sense that my heart and head were never quite present. -- Updated: Since April 2021, I have been working at a substance use recovery center. While I have a mind that craves freedom, I have a heart that craves to serve and help others be well. I am deeply connected to my intuition and something kept pointing me towards this opportunity. I'm already beginning to see why! Hint: My next book in the Becoming series ;-)

What have you learned since beginning?

SOOOO much about myself and human existence. Becoming an entrepreneur has been the reason I have healed much of my own karma, along with generational patterns that I refuse to pass down to my son and any future children. I do this work for myself (because I unconditionally love myself now through this healing work) but most importantly, I do it for the world, for humanity.

What’s the best advice you’ve received?

Everything is connected and everything you experience has a deeper meaning -- every animal that crosses your path, every interaction you encounter, every thought, feeling, and belief has a message for you.

What advice would you give someone just starting out?

Observe the "you" inside and ask WAAAAY more questions, especially "Why?"

What’s the professional win you’re most proud of?

Continuing my life's mission of sharing my thoughts, passions, and knowledge through writing books.

Is there a book you’d recommend to help with success and personal development?

Self-Compassion by Kristin Neff

Do you have a routine that you attest to your success? If yes, what is it?

A daily mindfulness practice. It looks different every day depending on my needs -- some days it's about moving my body through yoga or dance, other days it's about sitting quietly with my thoughts and feelings through self-compassion, forgiveness, or metta (loving-kindness). Some days I just want to sit in the shower and let the water flow over me. I ask the question "What do I need?" and I listen.

How has social media played a factor in your success?

My audience and clients come from all over the world! That is so cool!

What are the biggest social media mistakes you see commonly made?

I see a lot of aggression and hate going around between people with opposing viewpoints. This is what keeps humanity disconnected.

What is the business tool that’s been most helpful?

Reading literature and applying what I've learned!

Is there something you wish everyone knew?

All the lessons shared in both my books!

What’s coming up for you in the next few months?

This summer, I will be launching new courses and group programs around living your passion and practicing the skill of self-compassion. I also want to begin writing the third book of the Becoming Series, as well as beginning writing the idea my son and I have created for a children's book series.

What has being successful taught you?

To me, success is a mindset. It is also about developing a new perspective around "failure" and refocusing on your reason Why.

What are some fun facts about you?

Almost on a daily basis, I find heart-shaped things and have become known for this on social media so many people tag me in posts or share with me heart-shaped things they've found. I LOVE when this happens.
